#BETT2014 and #TMBett14 or #TMBett2014Fri. 24/1/14 – part 2 – one end of the hall.

Part 2

Reminder: 2014 guises I was attending under

– clothed in my new @globalsolo attire to prompt conversations about the new venture and growing network (550 members as I write this post).
– an advocate of pupil Digital leaders, a topic I presented about last year and I had planned to take a group this year until myMH absence put pay to this.
– a Promethean (UK & Ireland) teacher advocate team member to see people on the company stand including a number of fellow Advocates who had signed up for the show
– as a co-organiser of TMHavering on Tue 11/2/14 to drum up more attendees and ticket sales
– as a geographer looking for lesson ideas and apps that I could include I the work I do with the Geographical Association Special Interest Group and ideas for my workshop at conference this year on apps for beginners
– as a classroom teacher who wants to know what is available to enhance the awe and wonder in lessons
– to network and meet a variety of Twitter , blog and Teachmeet / PLN. Friends face to face, some for the first time
– to be at the world’s largest Teachmeet in the evening In a passive audience role, a first since a TM in Redbridge in 2010!!

On entry to the hall I headed to the start of the numbering sequence. On the way I made the first of many visits to Promethean to see any changes to the product line and meet fellow teacher advocates. Off to explore, now that I am not collecting leaflets for one and all I get the chance to be more selective. I went to find @MrSwickPE from WES who were promoting their teacher planner app. Having read a tweet the day before I received a promo code. Then the other purpose we had discussed was an explanation of how to explain Solo taxonomy using hexagons – an example, a badminton lesson. It was great to explain the idea.

I worked my way up the hall Rising Stars was next meeting @Dawnhallybone, @AndreaCarr, @Eyebeams, @ICTmagic. A bit of a chat the off to explore more. I saw that @Gr8ict and the lady Lumley Digital leaders were speaking on the Stone stand which. They had done so well in 2013, so. I decided to return for their talk at 12.00. If I use the exhibition guide which I rarely use on the day I could cite other sites visited. I had reached the arena in time to wish @TomHenzley (?spelling) and his DLs well for their Arena presentation – I had followed their blogposts from the train before I had left that morning.

The back to Stone and Lady Lumleys, their new members, work with feeder primaries and digital badges gave rise to more ideas for my school leaders when I return.

A visit to Promethean meant I saw the promotional video our team had made for the new ActivTouch board and I had my picture taken with the video behind. I was finding that. My new beard was throwing several people who almost didn’t recognise me.

Off to Rising Stars to hear @DawnHallybone and @Ideas_factory present a range of ideas. I made it through most of the talk before again spotting friends walking past and going to greet them.

My energy levels were dipping so I headed back to the Arena area to start on the second half of the hall and some refreshment.

To be continued – if travelogue / diary ramblings are too much then do not read further postings ( I have warned you).

#BETT2014 and #TMBett14 or #TMBett2014Fri. 24/1/14 – part 1 – reasons for attending and getting to show entry.

As some of my readers have noticed my new (ad)venture @globalsolo is dominating my blogging time at present. So I am going to post about my visit to these events here and copy the post onto globalsolo.wordpress.com too.

So in my mishmash approach / role the BETT show fulfills several functions. No longer do I attend as the school leaflet packhorse carrying many bags of assorted information. If I see ideas that may help others I pass on information, more often these days in e-links or names to contact.

So 2014 what guises was I attending under?

– clothed in my new @globalsolo attire to prompt conversations about the new venture and growing network (550 members as I write this post).
– an advocate of pupil Digital leaders, a topic I presented about last year and I had planned to take a group this year until myMH absence put pay to this.

Think that covers it – can you see why I use the name Mishmashlearning?

I count myself very lucky that Martin Burrett (aka @ICTMagic) has become a good friend and we have travelled to, spoke at, organised with and encouraged each other at events since first meeting in Feb. 2012 at TMEssex organised by Danny Nicholson in 2012. Martin offered me a lift to and from the show door to door andI accepted.

Our day out starts just before 9am when Martin pulls into my road. Our journey to the show guided by Google seems to be optimistic in its estimate of travel time. However, a virtually traffic free run sees us travel from Essex to the Excel centre before 10am. We chatted on route about a range of shared interests and projects.

He knows where we go having parked here on Wednesday. We make our way upstairs. I encourage Martin to use his press pass (@UKEdChatmag) to go ahead and avoid the queue. Just after 10 we are going in…

Update: Jan 23, 2014

Well this blog has been neglected recently. Life has been busy. End of November another phase of depression and mental health issues. At my lowest, just getting out of the bedroom was a struggle. Work- could I ever return to a classroom? What would I do instead? Brain in many places but none for very long, concentrating was difficult. How to start doing something about it?

Medication – I dream of the day I do not need anti depressants in my life, it’s not now. Initially an increase in doseage was tried – no effects either side – or beneficial. Signed off work I could not get out of the house let alone stand in front of a class. Then a new meds idea combining two approaches – within days it’s effects were felt positively. I knew that my local mental health trust ran a self esteem course and that point I needed to re-find some self confidence. I enquired and started to attend – group therapy, a new experience but one that has suited me. Also I took up my online ‘Beating the Blues’ (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)) course.

So therapy and meds, what else could I do? I went out, reluctantly at first to walk a bit most days. Then time to get the kayak out and some open air and water therapy. I paddled three times in December and once so far this month. River flooding has stopped me going on some days as the conditions did not make it safe. I started January by running- three 3 mile runs and then. It lapsed, butI “will” return to it.

Therapy, meds and exercise meant that I was getting somewhere. Term ended and there were signs of improvement. The doctor had signed for off for the first week of term, how I would feel by then was just a guess.

Christmas included seeing visiting family from New Zealand and eldest coming home for some home visits after almost 7 months. The mood was picking up, the self confidence returning. Occasionally I felt slightly hyper and managed to self regulate to calm myself – strategies now including the use of Mindfulness breathing exercises several times a day and keeping the mood diary I had started on my Stress and mood management course. Another photo and chat for the mindshackles project (see previous posts)”.

My interested in work was returning but I was not to do school work. Instead two projects have helped me. Work towards Teachmeet Havering on 11/2/14 which will form part of my working myself back in I hope. Secondly I have aspired to link a range of teachers in my PLN who use or are interested in Solo taxonomy.

I felt ready to return as per my certificate but agreed Occupational Health follow up was needed. I attended that on the 21/1/14 and by now I need to keep busier. The two projects become more detailed. I check with work that as absence is now not coded as sickness that I may attend two days of CPD – more of these in future posts.

The solo. Taxonomy project is called globalsolo and I have posted an introduction. In three weeks it has grown from an idea. To a gmail account (globalsolo14@gmail.com), a twitter account (@globalsolo) and a blog (globalsolo.wordpress.com). In those three weeks we have gained over 500 networkers through twitter. They represent 11 + subjects and come from 10+ countries around the world. From primary to secondary to university educators. We have had a logo competition chosen by the members of the network and it’s first outing except online will be on clothing at the first CPD day tomorrow. It has really got my brain buzzing again. I have designed logo ideas, made new solo taxonomy posters by developing my iApp skills in Grafio, shared ideas and made lesson and resource suggestions to teachers from a number of subjects and areas.

Other stuff continues to happen but in 2014 I proposed in my nurture posts tone more positive so those issues can stay offline this time, the feelings have been worked through and processed and I have moved on without blogging it out of my system. It’s still just the first month of a new year, but 2014 could offer a number of positives I couldn’t even have hoped for, let’s see how it goes.

globalsolo

2014 and my first post addresses two of my #nurture1314 aspirations. This post is education based and involves twitter, cross curriculum links and global working. Since I started to explore the use of Solo taxonomy in my teaching I have sought contact with others using it. This has meant developing links across the world. When groups in the UK have gathered it has mainly been subject based and I have hoped for some overarching canopy or network.

Not one to shirk from an idea. I started yesterday afternoon by posting the idea of #globalsolo as a network through my personal account onTwitter. I invited DMs of emails to for a #globalsolo mailing list on how I envisaged this developing. By the evening I had created a new Twitter account @globalsolo, an email account globalsolo14@gmail.com and a new wordpress based blog ( globalsolo.wordpress.com) and a Numbers based mailing list.

So 24 hours in,we have over 106 followers on Twitter from; England, Wales, Scotland, Sweden, UAE, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand. Followers are mainly teachers so far but from primary education, secondary education and some university based as well. The mailing list is over 35 strong.the blog has a few initial posts which share how the idea maybe developed.

So my 2014 has started very positively. This is no short term project and one I hope will develop a high profile. All interest and suggestions welcomed.

Thanks for reading and a happy new year to my regular readers and any newcomers.
